Gavin D. McSkeane (b. 2000) is an American painter based in Maryland whose work draws on the people, weather, folklore, and everyday life of the Maine coast. Working primarily in oil, his paintings begin in observed experience but often allow memory, invention, and personal mythology to complicate what actually happened.

McSkeane has spent his summers working aboard the Laura B., the freight boat serving Monhegan Island. The waterfront, its boats, islands, coworkers, family members, and passing encounters have become recurring subjects in his work. Rather than treating the coast as scenery, he is interested in the human life embedded within it: isolation, intimacy, superstition, routine, and the stories that accumulate around familiar places.

McSkeane earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2022 and his Master of Arts in Teaching in 2023. Recent solo exhibitions include A Quiet Spell (2026), Fair to Midland (2025), and Everything May Happen (2024).

During the academic year, McSkeane teaches studio art in Maryland while continuing his painting practice.
